DIABETES MELLITUS
Diabetes mellitus is an endocrine disorder in which there is insufficient amount or lack of insulin secretion to metabolize carbohydrate.
Types
There are three types
TYPE 1(IDDM)
Failure to produce enough insulin due to loss of beta cells. Causes are unknown.
Type 2(NIDDM)
Diabetes mellitus begins with insulin resistance a condition in which cell fails to respond insulin properly.
Common causes are a combination of excessive body weight and insufficient exercise.
Gestational diabetes-
Occur when pregnant women without previous history of diabetes develop high blood sugar level.
Symptoms
• High blood sugar
• Frequent urination
• Increased Thirst
• Increased Hunger
• Numbness
Complications
• Acute complication can include
• Diabetic ketoacidosis
• Hyper osmolor hyper glycemic state
• Death
Chronic complication include
• Cardio vascular disease
• Stroke
• Chronic kidney disease
• Foot ulcer
• Damage the eye.
